Housing That’s Home for Residents With (or Without) Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities

AARP Livable Communities
Washington, DC

“The shortage of affordable housing throughout the country has permeated political campaigns and grabbed headlines. This shortage is especially dire for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. In this series of articles, authors highlight the ‘integrated supportive housing’ framework to help meet the need for safe, affordable and accessible places to live--communities with a 75/25 split between people with and without disabilities. Using heart-felt case histories, the series effectively demonstrates how this replicable model (a partnership between public, private and nonprofit agencies) provides relief to families with round-the-clock support, while having residents integrate into a larger community.”

Disinformation in the Age of AI

AFCEA International
Fairfax, VA

“With timely insight and clarity, this article explores how election interference is evolving alongside generative AI. The article draws on a deep bench of expert voices—including former intelligence officials, cybersecurity leaders, and AI engineers—to illustrate how rapidly the threat landscape is shifting. Their perspectives lend both authority and urgency to the analysis. The piece blends policy context, global developments, and media literacy concerns to emphasize the need for institutional and individual resilience. In a world where false news is 70% more likely to spread than the truth, AI that can do the work of 100 agents of misinformation poses a formidable new challenge.”

Endeavor Pilot Performs on the Flight Deck and Concert Stage

Air Line Pilots Association
McLean, VA

“‘Whether he’s operating as a crewmember on the flight deck or performing an intricate passage as a member of a classical music ensemble, F/O Netanel Draiblate (Endeavor Air) has a reputation for paying great attention to detail. Known to his friends simply as ‘Nati,’ he executes his skills as both a New York-based Endeavor Air CRJ900 pilot and a concertmaster and violinist for the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra with great precision.’  This profile from ALPA guides us through the remarkable symphony of Nati’s dual careers. Few possess the drive to master even one demanding discipline—let alone two that require thousands of hours to truly excel. Yet Nati brings the same passion, precision, and perseverance expected of every pilot to both the skies and the concert hall, embodying the dedication and artistry that define each field.”

Challenges of caring for Alaskans: Fewer people, across more miles, often in cold, dark

American Heart Association News
Dallas, TX

“This writing series presents a layered and cohesive look at the complexities of health care in Alaska. One piece outlines the state’s systemic challenges—immense distances, limited infrastructure, and workforce strain—through the voices of those living it. Another offers personal snapshots from five Alaskans navigating these realities, several of whom also appear in the broader overview. A third story profiles one of them: Matthew Kuhns, a critical care nurse for an air ambulance company. That piece also broadens the lens, using Alaska as an entry point to examine the challenges facing rural health care across the country. Thoughtfully constructed and deeply human, the series captures both the scale and the soul of delivering care in America’s most remote regions.”

HIV cure, a less uncertain journey

BioWorld Science, from Clarivate
Talking Rock, GA

“‘HIV is the king of escape,’ says Alessio Nahmad, CEO and chief scientific officer, in the BioWorld Science article ‘In HIV, gene therapy could be alternative path to functional cure.’ This compelling series highlights the latest breakthroughs in the global effort to develop a universal cure for HIV. Despite decades of research, a definitive cure for HIV has remained elusive, largely due to the virus’s remarkable ability to mutate, adapt, and evade immune responses. However, recent progress offers new hope. The writers deliver insightful and forward-looking coverage of these advancements. Simultaneously, ongoing work to target the virus’s hidden reservoirs remains a focus in HIV research. These recent updates offer cautious optimism, reminding us to remain hopeful on the complicated path towards a cure.”

The next pandemic? How a familiar virus exploits new hosts

Duke NUS Medical School
Singapore

“When asked whether this could be the beginning of the next pandemic, Su whispered ‘I hope not’, as if her words could become a self-fulfilling prophecy if uttered too loud. With this chilling line, the author draws readers into the startling yet crucial exploration of the topic that many would want to avoid: the threat of the next pandemic. With a focus on the bird flu resurgence of early 2024, and its shocking ability to infect cows, the article describes alarming adaptability of influenza A as having an ‘extra evolutionary advantage’ because of its ability to infect multiple species and easily mutating across strains. Lim skillfully explains how the virus’ flexibility increases the risk of more frequent and severe outbreaks, with the need for improved and adaptable prevention measures. Clear, well-designed graphics accompany the piece, illustrating the virus's possible pathway across species and enhancing the reader's understanding of the topic.”

My CSX DEI Story
CSX Corporation
Jacksonville, FL

“The ‘My CSX DEI Story’ video campaign is a robust vehicle in which CSX employees share their DEI stories. Judges appreciated from-the-heart stories that reflect a dynamic workforce, mirroring the diverse communities that employees live in and serve. The format is the ideal medium to showcase employee stories and give a peek into their company roles. Combining an interview style video with B-roll shots of employees in their day-to-day lives at CSX brought a polished but not overly produced style.”

“Open wide! With advancements in 3-D printing, this article highlights the possibility of spending less time in the dentist’s chair. It refutes the adage ‘if it’s not broke, don’t fix it,’ by describing benefits to replacing crowns and bridgework before they break. It succinctly explains new materials and equipment that can allow crowns in one visit and whole dentures in three visits. The judges were impressed with the quality of the information and the accessible writing style. Time to smile for the camera!”

Prompt Engineering for Nurse Educators

Duke University, Editor-in-Chief Nurse Educator

“This article explores how nurse educators can optimize their use of AI tools through effective prompt design. It highlights a key challenge: without clear, strategic prompting, AI responses may be inaccurate or irrelevant. The author introduces the CLEAR technique, along with guidance on defining learning objectives and understanding the target audience, as essential steps in crafting useful prompts. The article concludes that by mastering prompt engineering, educators can transform AI into a powerful teaching ally, which could mean enhancing instructional effectiveness, improving workflow efficiency, and enriching student learning. A practical, forward-thinking guide for educators navigating AI integration.”

‘We cannot pour from an empty cup:’ Work-life balance takes priority for today’s providers

Healio
Thorofare, NJ

“When it comes to work-life balance, health care providers have skewed more toward work than life. However, shifting demographics in the medical workforce, increasing capacity for communication and the pandemic have altered that. This succinct, yet comprehensive article examines shifting priorities, changing demographics and ongoing concerns, and offers tips that can help retain staff and help individual physicians lead more balanced and fulfilling lives. One compelling highlighted concern is response fatigue--patients often have multiple ways to access their physician 24 hours a day. Then there is the backlash against the scientific community --including doctors. And with 45% of physicians over 55, the problem of work-life balance is poised to continue. Add to that extra stress on many female physicians--in dual-physician households, 80% of the housework and childcare duties fall on the woman.”

The Story Behind Pixar’s RenderMan CGI Software

IEEE The Institute
Piscataway, NJ

“To infinity and beyond! Many of us (those of us over 35!) remember being enchanted as we watched Pixar’s Toy Story for the first time in 1995. But the development of the technology that led to the first fully computer-generated animated movie is not something widely known. Using an engaging story and vivid language, this article delineates the history behind the groundbreaking computer technology tools that were introduced as RenderMan by a group of computer scientists in the 1980s. So next time we escape from reality for a few hours by watching a movie or TV service that uses visual effects, we will pay silent homage to that group of innovative computer scientists.”

IEEE Robotics & Automation Magazine, September 2024, “What Is the Proper Gait Pattern for People With Paraplegia Who Wear Powered Exoskeletons?”

Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Piscataway, NJ

“This expertly composed article explains how walking like able-bodied people may not be the best option for those with paraplegia, since exoskeletons are more limited in their degrees of freedom than the human body. Individuals need to develop new gait/walking patterns. Setting this article above others in the field is its use of detailed graphics coupled with meticulously researched text. One comprehensive chart compares the types/brands of available exoskeletons, while a series of detailed drawings illustrates the stability and crutch positions in standing postures. Another graphic shows foot pressure distribution measurements (monitoring a successful weight shift during locomotion). Although the field of robotics may still be in its infancy, this article demonstrates how far we have come.”

Domestic violence survivor calls for change to insurance contracts

Insurance Business Australia
Toronto, ON
Canada

“Judicious use of quotes combined with real-life events make this article straightforward and relatable. Written to address the victim-survivor needs, this article explores the necessity of a ‘Conduct of Others’ clause in insurance policies. Very few policies have these clauses, which allow compensation for damages caused by the abusive actions of others. The use of a case study brings home how insurance can be used to inflict financial/emotional harm on victim-survivors.”

“With social media, the prevalence of eating disorders has risen substantially. This comprehensive article helps nurses negotiate the complex care of these patients. Tables of the classifications of eating disorders and physiological changes resulting from eating disorders serve as valuable aids in recognizing each disorder. This well-crafted writing provides insights into how nurses may provide care for patients with eating disorders from identification and referral to recovery, and offers important resources as well.”

Sending T Cells Into Space in Hopes of Improving Cancer Care

Wolters Kluwer Health
Philadelphia, PA

“Growing up, Dr. Cassian Yee was an avid Star Wars/Star Trek fan. Maybe that is what led him to imagine if prolonged exposure to microgravity could change cancer cells in a way that could enhance cancer treatment strategies. This fascinating interview/profile describes the work of oncologists at MD Anderson Cancer Center who are sending T cells to the International Space Station in hopes of identifying gene targets associated with microgravity (they will then use that knowledge to improve T-cell therapies). The stellar writing is simple enough for a lay person to comprehend, with sufficient science to keep physician-researchers reading. It is rare for judges to find a scientifically precise article that has such broad appeal.”

One gripping series of articles highlights Dickens and the perception of blindness and other diseases in the Victorian Age (think Tiny Tim). Another captivating series discusses the cause of Napoleon's death (gastric carcinoma) and the medical innovations made during the Napoleonic Wars (e.g., our modern system of triage and the use of ambulance carriages with medical instruments/bandages). Another article in a series about Mozart examines the effect of his music on cognition. These engaging articles offer compelling evidence, are well-researched, and are written to capture and hold readers’ attention.”

Well-crafted to inspire the next generation of women engineers, this issue also included profiles of women to watch in engineering. Dr. Kiani Morgan targeted a career in STEM after living through war in Iran, eventually working with volunteer programs to help energy-impoverished communities. And Kendra Cook’s journey to work on NASA’s Europa Clipper mission has us looking forward to its anticipated 2030 arrival at Jupiter.”

But the use of colorful article opening pages (a rainbow of orange, blue, violet, red, teal and dark green) with embedded designs and photos is what kept our visual attention. The overall layout is aesthetically pleasing and made the issue easy to navigate through. (Note: We especially love the smiling veggies, bread and cheese on the ‘Recipe for Success’ article!)”

County of Los Angeles Deferred Compensation and Thrift Plan 457(b) Horizons & County of Los Angeles 401(k) Savings Plan
Los Angeles, CA

“The best measure of any campaign is its results. This comprehensive program helps employees understand their specific retirement challenges and the resources available to them. Included in this multi-faceted campaign are an email/postcard outreach, mini retirement fairs, in-person events (with handouts/enrollment packets), virtual seminars, and individual comprehensive account reviews. Judges particularly like the ‘building a sandcastle’ savings graphic, which makes complex information easy to understand for all employees.  In contrast to a one-size-fits-all outreach effort, this individualized approach reached 2,099 employees who had started saving late, were under-contributing, and/or were investing inappropriately. Air Line Pilot Magazine Pilot Photography Issue

Air Line Pilots Association
McLean, VA

“Few professions offer a perspective on the world as unique as the one experienced from the flight deck. Whether chasing the sun across multiple time zones through a maze of towering cloud formations or watching the hustle and bustle of cities from thousands of feet above, airline pilots observe the beauty of our planet in a way that few others do.  The ALPA’s 14th Annual Pilot Photography Issue captures this awe-inspiring view, pairing breathtaking cockpit imagery with majestic profiles of the aircraft themselves. The issue serves as both a tribute to the profession and a vivid reminder of the wonder and reward found in a life spent above the clouds.”

2025 Masters Journal
Augusta National Golf Club & H.O. Zimman, Inc.
Lynn, MA

“It is often said that a picture is worth 1,000 words, and that is surely the case with this entry. The Masters Journal photographers instantly transport viewers to the verdant oasis of the August National Golf club. The photos show lush greenery, stone bridges, rippled water features, and sculpted sand traps--all against the backdrop of the stately white clubhouse with its two-tiered porches, cupola and crow’s nest. A featured article highlights each hole from the view of the current #1 player, Scottie Scheffler, with photography showing the flora surrounding the hole--from bright pink azaleas to blue-green chinese fir trees. And the photos of players give viewers the sense of action, quiet and joy that are all part of the Masters experience.”

“Creeping Decline”

Concealed Carry Magazine
West Bend, WI

“This clever reimagining of Leonardo da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, featured in Concealed Carry Magazine, replaces the idealized male form with an aging figure. He is complete with an insulin pump, CPAP machine, hearing aid, bifocals, and other real-world signs of aging. In contrast to the original which symbolized perfect human proportion and harmony, this version reminds us that strength and health evolve with age. It visually reinforces the article’s message: adapting your personal defense plan means acknowledging physical changes while maintaining self-reliance. This illustration blends honesty and symbolism to celebrate resilience and preparedness at every stage of life.”

2024 US Open Tennis Tournament Program
USTA & H.O. Zimman, Inc.
Lynn, MA

“Remarkably designed in just 10 days (by Chelsey Farris--who has never played/attended a tennis match), the tennis ball-themed graphics in this program are vignettes that draw attention to 16 integral elements of the US Open and tennis that were used throughout the venue. Starting on the cover is a can of four vibrant, stacked tennis balls displayed on the US Open’s brilliant blue court background, representing themes of tradition, diversity/inclusion, New York City, and health & wellness. The program then goes on to effectively use a mix of color, boldly designed headline typefaces, still/action shots with player profiles to evoke the dynamic feeling of the US Open and the tennis players.”

“These three interconnected sites (Interfaith America,The Team Up Project and Evangelicals) impressed the judges with engaging multimedia content, valuable resources, and meaningful opportunities for deeper involvement. The judges particularly liked the Team Up Project site, funded by the collaboration of Interfaith America, YMCA of the USA, Habitat for Humanity International and Catholic Charities USA. Empowering people to build connections across differing communities, it includes an interactive quiz, a storybuilder and access to a free course on bridgebuilding. ANNUAL REPORTS

Seth Katzen
Alex Tornek
TOGETHER As One

Jewish Federation of Delaware
Wilmington, DE

“This is not your typical annual report filled with balance sheets and numbers. Although there are numbers such as the proceeds of the annual campaign and the Israel Emergency Fund balance, this online report uses video to pinpoint the activities of (and allocations to) local, national, and global Jewish needs. It focuses on how local agencies provide critical services and quality programs throughout Delaware and the Brandywine Valley, as well as their global outreach. Judges were impressed with the quality of the videos and how well they reflected the goals of the annual report/campaign. They especially appreciated how videos combined home traditions, schools and volunteer work to show how funding is used to combat antisemitism, protect Jewish communities, support Jewish culture and lend humanitarian aid.”

CURRENT EVENTS & TRENDING TOPICS

Steve Schering
Articles for pediatricians/ about pediatrics

American Academy of Pediatrics
Itasca, IL

‘Like everything else we do [...] it’s about kids and families and communities.’ This is the overarching theme of this series of articles featured in American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) News. The articles provide thoughtful commentary on emerging discussions of pediatric weight loss drugs along with current events like drug shortages and pediatric care at U.S. border facilities. The article, Child-centered care needed at U.S. border facilities, is a seamless blend of current news and human interest, with AAP News taking readers to the U.S./Mexico border to witness the pediatric needs of families in these vulnerable, and often overlooked communities.”

Estuaries Face a Stormy Future

American Scientist Magazine
Research Triangle Park, NC

"‘Estuaries are renowned for their distinctive habitats and for the many freshwater and marine plants and animals they support … But like any delicately balanced system, they are extremely sensitive to environmental shifts, including those brought on by climate change.’ In this piece from American Scientist, the authors mix expert storytelling with vivid imagery and informative graphics to both educate and mobilize the reader. With clarity and urgency, this article explores the ecological richness of these vital ecosystems while illuminating the threats they face—from rising seas to nutrient overload—making science both accessible and impactful."

Dave Shaw
Coastwatch Magazine: The 2024 Volume Year and the Winter 2025 Edition (Five Issues)

Coastwatch Magazine
Raleigh, NC

Coastwatch Magazine, the signature publication of North Carolina Sea Grant, blends accessible reporting with scientific depth to engage over a quarter-million readers annually. This five-issue series covers critical climate and sustainability topics with a regional lens and national relevance. Highlights include the first published findings on sea level rise’s threat to coastal salt marshes, a conversation with Jacques Cousteau’s grandson on building ‘the ISS of the Ocean,’ and a wide array of features on coastal resilience and marine science. With striking visuals and compelling voices, Coastwatch invites readers to take a deep dive (get it?) into the challenges and possibilities of our changing coasts.”

Kerry Hansen
Women in Leadership columns, Public Management Magazine

ICMA
Midlothian, VA

“‘Don’t be too pretty (threatening), just pretty enough.’ This engaging column from the Women in Leadership series addresses how unspoken beauty standards hold women back and send daughters into the jaws of eating disorders, bullying and addiction. Other compelling personal accounts discuss juggling being a mom with a job in city management and how women tend to lead differently. All of the columns tackle the tough issues facing women in local government.  The expertly composed stories about the tough issues facing women in government are enlightening, inspiring, encouraging, and impactful.”

Mary Beth Schwartz
Energy Efficiency is Not Enough!

IEEE Power Electronics Society
Milford, NJ

“It’s gettin’ hot out there! In its latest report, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) concludes that any continuing increase of global temperatures will aggravate climate-related risks like species losses, extreme heat and humidity, and negatively impact food production and water availability. This article successfully argues that energy efficiency alone is not enough, and that power electronics is a key enabling technology for a future power distribution system. It espouses a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach--with a fascinating sidebar on PV inverters--to minimize the environmental impact of a future power-electronics-dominated energy system (with the aid of AI tools). This thoroughly researched and thought-provoking article even had judges re-examine their own impact on the environment--exactly what an effective article should do.”
