“The impact of COVID on medical professionals has been oft-discussed and this piece is a stark indication of the trauma nurses have faced, and how the turnover in nursing positions has worsened.  This study addresses the issue by identifying the multiple causes leading to that turnover, and suggesting possible solutions.  This could be one of the most valuable research projects initiated to help reduce turnover among nurses and improve the quality of patient care.”

“There are some entry titles that, just by the nature of the title, spur interest in the entry.  This one did not disappoint.  The article describes the research and experimentation conducted to address the high amount of CO2 emissions encountered by burning propane to roast green peppers.  The result led to not only greater efficiencies, but tastier green peppers!  The background, strategy and conclusions  made for a wonderfully interesting article that may very well lead to similar changes for other products.  Truly ground-breaking!”

Counseling Today - August 2022
American Counseling Association
Alexandria, VA

“This judge was immediately attracted to the magazine cover of this entry – the headline of ‘Supporting Student Mental Health,’ supported by the cute picture of a backpack-laden early-elementary youngster requires one to flip directly to the article.  Once inside, the article does not disappoint, discussing how the topic needs the support of counselors, school staff, parents and outside menta health professionals.  The other featured articles – ‘A cognitive behavioral understanding of social anxiety disorder’ and ‘Compromising care:  An occupational hazard for counseling leaders’ contribute to an issue that is definitely deserving of a Grand Award.”

IEEE Computer Society

“Are you ready for life in a circular city? This entry explores how cities are adapting to population growth and climate change by implementing new operational models that use emerging technologies to improve efficiency, sustainability, safety, and resilience. In a series of 8 articles, authors address how we will need new operational community models, how AI can enhance security and protect security, and how traffic safety can increase using edge computing. Each article used effective visual models and charts to help illustrate the new concepts.  Other articles tackle the field of evolving computer engineering education, and how data and AI can be used as tools to fight poverty.”

Real Asset Adviser - September 2022 issue
Institutional Real Estate, Inc.

“Everyone is talking about the housing shortage, digital wallets or the insurance crisis due to severe weather changes. The issue submitted with this entry addresses all of these topics and more. First, we learn how ground-up development and investing in affordable housing can help the economy and investors. Next, we discover how digital wallets are penetrating traditional financial services and will soon dominate (as in China and Southeast Asia). Lastly, as we see an uptick in recent fires, floods and tornadoes, the insurance business has been rocked--higher premiums and less coverage are coming. Striking photography and detailed charts/graphs add to the overall readability of this entire issue.”

“In this series of podcasts, real estate pros chronicle real-life stories and tips to inspire success. Although the three submitted podcasts were all excellent, the one on fair housing really got the judges’ attention. It started with a personal story of discrimination and how that influenced the speaker’s conviction that no one should be excluded from a neighborhood due to race, religion, disability, sexual preference, etc. The podcast had each participant share a song that inspired them and a personal experience with discrimination. Then, they explained how they handled the situation and gave solid recommendations on how other Realtors could approach similar situations. One message that hit home was how some people look at a person in a wheelchair and automatically speak to the person with them--as though the person in the wheelchair can’t speak for themself. The speakers’ varied backgrounds gave authenticity to the podcast, making it much more compelling to listen to.”

Mental Health Connections: Building a Global Counseling Community Keynote
National Board for Certified Counselors, Inc. and Affiliates
Greensboro, NC

“What could have been a boring slate of interviews was instead a riveting panel that gave insight into the state of mental health in Bhutan, Malawi, Zambia and the Philippines. This entry consisted of a series of 4 interviews that were recorded to play together as the keynote presentation at the National Board for Certified Counselors’ annual Mental Health Connections conference. Each video began with an eye-catching visual of a spinning globe that laser-focused on the specific country as music from that country played in the background. The counselors then delineated the struggles and successes they are having in erasing the stigma of mental health and the shortage of mental health professionals, as well as how they are dealing with rising suicide rates, family/couples counseling, stress management, and licensing/education problems. Each interviewee aided viewers in understanding the issues that face mental health professionals worldwide.”

“This exciting video series opens with the initial construction of the Orlando Health Jewett Orthopedic Institute Downtown Complex. Doctors, administrators, nurses and other personnel and patients were all consulted in planning this premier institute to provide improved orthopedic care--Florida’s first full-service orthopedic specialty hospital. The videos highlighted key components of the complex: elevating patient care by having everything in one building; enhancing the education of residents; and devoting a whole floor to research. At 3-4 minutes each, the videos targeted each topic (institute highlights, construction, etc.) without getting bogged down in minutiae. Each spokesperson’s presentation was succinct and incisive. Pictures complemented the voices by showing areas of the complex as it rose from the ground--including a time-lapse video.”

What happened in 1957: A Turning Point in SWE’s Journey Toward Inclusion
Society of Women Engineers
Cleveland Heights, OH

“In an era in which the minorities often feel a backward trend, this entry feels prescient. This special podcast highlights events in 1957 and later that led to a turning point in SWE’s journey toward inclusion. SWE accepted its first black member in 1952, and in 1957 she was to attend the national convention in Houston, However, at the last minute, the hotel refused to allow her in. As a compromise, they let her attend the convention during the day if escorted in and out by a white member. SWE followed their requirements, but not the hotel’s intent to keep her out of view. The members had Clark stroll throughout the hotel lobby and cafe throughout the day in full view of all guests. This led to changes SWE’s policies, and the moving of the 1962 convention from Atlanta to Chicago to protect all members from being “embarrassed” by segregation laws. More than ever, the judges felt that this was a valuable, shareable educational moment on inclusivity--even when it wasn’t the easiest road.”

“When a video placed on a social media platform gets over 3.4 million views, there has to be a compelling reason for its popularity.  The space shuttle Endeavour’s 25 missions, with 154 astronauts, contributed to recapturing the excitement of for NASA and America’s space program  The sight of Endeavour flying over the iconic “Hollywood” sign is just one of the strikingly emotional visuals of the shuttle, mounted on a plane, taking its last flight with an escort of jets.  This is just a MUST watch.”

It was simple to search through the sites for topics such as career opportunities and events calendars.”

“Eye-catching graphics … simple navigation … innovative click-thrus … unique audio/visual presentation… this website has it all.  The “zoom-in” home page presents a colorful display of a generic ‘Main Street’ of America with seven links at the top and four video magazines. Such a massive amount of STEM information, presented in such an uncluttered and attractive style is something rarely seen – definitely meriting a Grand Award.”

‘OneWorld’ Jacobs Employee Network – OneWorld Cookbook

“This submission had the judges’ mouths watering--literally! It was one of our most unique Special Purpose entries--a cookbook created by one of the Jacobs Employee Networks: OneWorld. This project reflects their mission to strengthen cross-cultural and global connectivity by enhancing cultural intelligence and embracing diversity. In the OneWorld Cookbook, employees contributed their own family recipes--each employee-chef’s name, position and location were listed along with a brief background about the recipe (family traditions and how the recipe was created/passed down). In addition, each section had a gorgeous food photo and a food quote. Recipes were truly global--from South Africa and Peru, to Vietnam, France and Malta. Our judges probably lingered a little longer than usual as they chose a favorite recipe to try out, from Indian mango lassi to Hungarian Kiffle cookies to Saudi Chicken Kabs. What a fantastic way for a company to have its employees around the world get to know and learn about their colleagues.”

How to take care of kids when a natural disaster strikes
American Heart Association News
Dallas, TX

“Wildfires .. floods … hurricanes … tornadoes … it seems like there isn’t a week that goes by where one of those disasters hits someone’s home.  The question of how to take care of children during these events is of utmost importance, and that is why this entry merits a Grand Award.  According to this article, each year world wide, 175 million children are affected by natural disasters.  There is valuable information throughout on what to do – and what not to do – to help children recover and return to ‘normal lives.’”

“It happens very rarely that a written piece grabs you with is first sentence and holds you, almost riveted, to the very last word.  This issue of the trade journal of an organization featured several hard-hitting articles that comprised a cover story on the challenges faced by its members who were personally affected by the horror in Ukraine.  The final story, describing the effort needed to get the parents of a key organizational exec out of the war-torn country is just a ‘must-read.’  Stories like this one make the little day-to-day problems in life, seem just like that – little problems.”

Florida and Louisiana in crisis – a tale of two states
Insurance Business
Toronto, ON
Canada

“Today, the phrase “climate change” headlines newspapers and news programsAny free t on almost a daily basis. This well-written and researched article meticulously delves into the homeowners’ insurance crises in Florida and Louisiana, including skyrocketing premiums and insolvent insurers. While there has been some legislation to help, such as Florida’s new rules on roofing, the fear is that it is too little to stem the wave of devastation that is coming down the pike due to climate change. The author uses comments from key stakeholders and data from insurers to verify the story. Although cognizant that the core audience is insurance agents, the author stresses that these agents are frustrated as they try to get the best deal for policyholders who may not have a strong grasp of problems plaguing the market. Without sounding a death knell, the writer’s words reveal the seriousness of the crisis.”

Clear-eyed perspective on home care
McKnight’s Home Care
Northbrook, IL

“In these wonderfully written editorials, the writer provides an honest view of major industry news and is not afraid to "tell it like it is.” In the first column, she uses a well-known scientific law to explain the friction between the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC), which advises Congress on payment rates, and the home health industry--and theorizes that maybe MedPAC is picking on the wrong guy! The next column critiques Amazon for its mistaken forays into healthcare — kudos for taking on this behemoth corporation! Finally, the third editorial seeks to explain a new concept in home care — longitudinal care — and how it fills a much-needed niche in the market today. In each case, the author tries to expand readers’ perspectives and make sure the industry focuses on what really matters — its people.”

Advice From Mom
National Ground Water Association
Westerville, OH

“Dealing with the loss of a parent is always difficult, but in this column, the judges not only felt the tug at our heartstrings, but appreciated the editor’s ability to take lessons learned and apply them to the business world. Although his mom grew up poor in Appalachia, she instilled in her children important values. The editor’s three takeaways from her life were straightforward: explore new things, be nice to everyone, and take care of people who are important to you. How he related those to business gave us pause to think of our own lives and workplaces. Don’t be afraid to explore new avenues in your business. Be nice to all customers. Treat your employees like family. Simple messages written with tenderness and conviction.”

Securing Software Supply Chains

“Many of us have either been the victim of cyberattack or know someone who has been affected by an attack. But even the judges were surprised at the escalation of attacks over the past few years. This series of blogs and accompanying article present how the security of software supply chains has emerged as a major, new area of cyber risk for private and public organizations. However, little is known about threats to software supply chains and the measures that can be taken to insulate from software supply chain attacks. These blogs with an accompanying report provide vital insights into the surge in attacks that can leak sensitive information. The writers make predictions and recommendations for securing executable code, including the use of software supply chain automation to outrun threats and updated federal policy/aid. Actual cybersecurity breaches from large corporations are used to give credence to their predictions.”
