Racism in pediatric health
MJH Life Sciences

“There are few topics that generate more passion in media than the topic of racism. It is difficult for most adults to deal with the topic and this entry brings to the forefront how the topic affects children. This special report on “Racism in pediatric health & How to talk to children about racism” should be required reading for not only pediatric specialists, but parents as well. If nothing were presented other than the table outlining at what ages children are exposed to various racial-awareness milestones and how to provide guidance, this would be an award-winning entry. Not surprisingly, the recommendations offered on how to speak to children about racial issues also would be helpful in speaking to adults. Without doubt, just a valuable resource for pediatricians."

“The multi-colored, maze-like illustration on a front cover with the probing question ‘How do we create
systemic change’ immediately grabbed this judge’s attention. Within the first 18 pages, the reader is offered thoughtful, insightful editorial and statistics on such critical topics as diversity in engineering by gender, race, sexual orientation and age … addressing the impacts of the pandemic and racism … and the factors surrounding “#ShutDownSTEM.” The undeniably and vitally important topic of the changes in work and the workplace do to the pandemic which appears right before the feature article on systemic change assured this judge’s opinion that this is an issue packed solid with valuable information for its readers. Job well done!”

“With the pandemic wreaking havoc on individuals’ savings, it became even more important to wade
through the plethora of published information to find reliable, authoritative guidance. The publications provided for this entry featured topics like ‘Retirement Moves to Make in 2021,’ ‘3 Ways to Maximize Your Social Security Income,’ ‘How Our Emotions Affect Investment Decisions,’ ‘Saving for College in an Uncertain Market,’ ‘Tax-Smart Ways to Leave Wealth to Your Heirs,’ “Protect Yourself From Cyberfraud,” and several other extremely helpful articles on retirement and financial planning for the non-financial professional. This is the type of information that is always important, but in 2020, it was
vital."

“There was no shortage of challenges to elementary education due to the pandemic. Many programs were introduced as educators sought to find the “new normal,” and this was one of the best. The submissions provided for this entry included a PBS Learning Media landing page that provided a
complete overview of the program; a comprehensive list of procedures to conduct it; and the state and federal standards met. The highlight of this entry is a completely online, interactive lesson called “Ways
of Watersheds” a colorful, engaging lesson explaining how crucial watersheds are to healthy water,
which attracted over 7,400 users and 14,000 page views in 10 months. Just a wonderful online lesson that captivates students and educators alike.”

“The pandemic seriously affected restaurants and food operations worldwide. Those that survived were
forced to be creative and innovative in their response to the pandemic. This entry is a glowing example
of that creativity. The seafood industry is critical to the economy of North Carolina, and the steps taken
to ensure its survival were nothing short of mouth-watering! Resources like “How to Freeze NC Seafood,” the “Mariner’s Menu” and numerous articles on seafood preparation and seafood availability by species and season along with numerous recipes kept the observer’s taste buds very active! Combine that with a dedicated portal to resources for seafood consumers, marine science educators, and seafood industry professionals, and you have a complete campaign to protect the viability of this important segment of the state’s economy.”

“There’s an adage which simply states “sometimes, less is more.”
As it relates to design and illustration, this is true when the artist/designer/illustrator provides just enough so that it supports, but does not dominate the editorial content. This entry is a perfect example. An article with the headline “Dismantling the Glass Ceiling” has each of those words divided by a simple horizontal break along with puzzle pieces made out of glass. It is the perfect accompaniment to the topic of the article.”
