The Extraordinary World
of Music and the Mind
by John Colapinto

AARP The Magazine
Washington, DC

“Beginning with a wonderful episode of a young man transforming a NYC subway station into a spirit-lifting experience, this article explains how ‘music therapy' is much more than a trite phrase.  Using five songs, the writer explains how music can help us deal with isolation, memory loss, dementia, and other conditions.  In addition, the reader is made away of how various areas of the brain -- brain stem, motor centers, language centers and emotion centers to name a few – ‘light up’ with the introduction of music.  Just a truly fascinating article.”

Title: Courts, Congress explore
tech company accountability
for social media harms

American Association
for Justice
Washington, DC

“Should the laws that social media companies say immunizes them from prosecution be amended or changed? To what extent is are companies responsible for the content other post on their sites? This entry offers compelling questions that deserve well-reasoned answers, especially as AI exerts more influence on social media content. Focusing on recent court cases, the article takes an in-depth look at the accusation that social media companies are turning a blind eye to harmful content, resulting in terrorism, dangerous driving, harm to children’s mental health, and more. Through stimulating text, it sets forth how harmful behavior is promoted through the use addictive algorithms.”

“This heart-rending personal profile lays out Dr. Ellwanger’s at times harrowing mission to bring much-needed maxillofacial/reconstructive surgery to Ukrainians, often those on or close to the battlefields. After raising $500,000 in US donations for the forPeace nonprofit, he and a group of volunteers helped train surgeons and procured medical equipment and supplies. His frank discussion of the conditions in hospitals and the serious surgeries is truly eye-opening for those of us lucky enough to have readily-available medical care nearby.”

“The topic of ‘career burnout’ is one that has grown more and more prevalent as technology has advanced.  The judges singled out this particular entry because the ‘career’ highlighted was one in the medical field.  We all look to doctors to solve our health problems, but with that pressure to be perfect comes intense stress -- leading to burnout.  This article, beginning with one medical professional going through a truly harrowing experience, details the mental health trauma that some go through and how to try to find peace.  An eye-opener for the judges.”

Real Women, Real Stories

“Inspirational. Effective. Uplifting. These ‘Share Your Story’ columns spell out the journeys of three women with three very different life-altering diagnoses: C. diff, colon cancer and depression. The columns effectively demonstrate the importance of women advocating for themselves…and persevering until the correct diagnosis and treatment is found. Sometimes those answers can be found through social media, in medications, or transplant volunteers. But these concise, approachable first-person accounts also include heart-warming tales of new love, support groups and steadfast partners.”

“The topic of nursing home abuse is both a practical and emotional one.  This entry covered the first-ever staffing mandate for nursing homes, and was at the head of the media outlets covering the story.  From reporting the news, to thorough and professional follow-up stories covering the news and analysis related to the story, the judges were unanimous in their praise and opinion to name this entry a Grand Award winner.”

Wildlife During Wartime

“Bats unable to escape from burned-out buildings... bombed dams flooding ecosystems (washing away newts, deer, foxes, snakes and wild boar)… danger (for animals and biologists) in fields of unexploded ordinance. When we think about the war in Ukraine, we think of the human toll. The effects on wildlife are not usually newsworthy. Bringing to the fore the plight of wildlife, this article, with graphic photos, tells how impossible it is to determine the effects of war on wildlife due to shuttered facilities, personnel shortages and areas inaccessible for monitoring. The feature does hold out hope that some wildlife may benefit, since humans are keeping away from some areas.”

Preparing for the Unthinkable
AAHA
Lakewood, CO

“The first line of the article submitted for this entry attracted the attention of each judge:  ‘In January, 2023, there were only eight days in the U.S. without any mass shooting…’  The rest of the piece explains how a veterinary facility with 140 employees designed an ‘active shooter’ plan.  Obviously, the guidelines presented are appropriate for more than just veterinary facilities, so there is much value to any business/retail location.  The judges, to a person, shook their head at the need for such an article, but also were very complimentary that the information was available.”

“Tea in the Harbors”:
Articles from Hallowed
Ground Magazine, Winter 2023

American Battlefield Trust
Washington, DC

“Cuppa tea anyone? In several riveting articles, historians and writers describe the rebellion of the American colonists against the unfair acts of the British Parliament leading up to the American Revolution, especially the Tea Act of 1773. The articles trace the rebellion from the Sons and Daughters of Liberty through the colonial towns that had ‘tea parties.’ Note: Boston was not the only one to hold a tea party, although many school textbooks skim over this. The clear and engaging writing brings forward little-known facts, such as the types of tea that were thrown overboard and the Charleston Tea Party. The writing and editing create a well-thought-out group of articles that seamlessly blend together, making the reader want to learn more about this pivotal time in US history.”

American Heart
Association News
Dallas, TX

“Many remember when Damar Hamlin of the Buffalo Bills went into cardiac arrest during a game. However, this is about the after story—how CPR/AED training within the NFL took off, paying dividends right away. Just weeks after his training, Raheem Morris, defensive coordinator for the Rams, used his training to help revive a 3-year-old pulled from the bottom of a pool. This inspirational story encourages more people to learn CPR and how to use an AED using example rather than preaching to the audience. This compelling article will encourage readers, and our judges, to review/take the CPR training…and take note of AEDs in our surroundings.”

Oximetry Values

American Journal
of Critical Care
Aliso Viejo, CA

“Especially since Covid, the use of pulse oximeters in the home as well as in hospitals has exploded. But have you ever thought of the role that your skin color might play in the readings? With compelling studies and statistics, this article shows how darker pigmentation results in an overestimation of oxygenation, which can result in delays in hospital admission and needed treatment with oxygen. It succinctly makes the case for new manufacturing standards and equipment to make sure that all patients have accurate medical readings.”

“The mention of the term ‘A.I.’ sparks both anticipation and fear in the minds of many.  That's why this special issue of ‘Robotics & Automation’ is a Grand Award winner.  Eight feature articles covering, albeit using the language appropriate for its audience, but less so for the ‘regular reader,’ all the topics addressed are cutting-edge and will affect every one of us as we near the second quarter of the 21st century.  Each article, replete with charts and graphs providing clear illustrations for all the information presented, emphasizes all the ‘good’ that can come from the new technology.”

The New Mobility Handbook –
Rethinking How We Get
Around Cities, 2024 Edition

SAE International
Saint Joseph, MI

“Since Uber appeared and the pandemic decimated public transportation, new mobility technologies have been at odds with urban settings. In a smart, logical approach, this handbook outlines how multimodal travel policies can reshape our roads. Using sound arguments, the writer advocates for getting rid of street parking in cities and putting cars in garages. This would leave room for ‘micromobility’— protected lanes for   ebikes, scooters and bicycles to travel safely. There would be drop-off/pick up zones for car services. Buses could then travel more easily, making their schedules more reliable. The handbook doesn’t shy away from hot topics such as pricing road use fairly and autonomous ride services. All-in-all a provocative rethinking of how we get around in our cities.”

“Louisiana is not just New Orleans. From its Mardi Gras cover to extensive coverage of food-centric venues, this Northshore issue reminds us that Louisiana’s St. Tammany Parish has festivals, shopping, restaurants, and activities to rival (and often outshine) those of the NOLA. The layout is extremely reader-friendly, with maps and sidebar listings of culinary hotspots, Mardi Gras terms, cultural hiking trails/outdoor activities, and local shopping gems. The written descriptions of soul-stirring food had the judges’ mouths salivating, and depictions of the myriads of other activities had the yearning to visit an area with all of the music and atmosphere of the Big Easy, but with a fraction of the crowds.”

“How many of us know the role of the Consumer Safety Commission, the Agriculture Department or the National Park Service? Did you know that the FDA doesn’t just regulate medicines, but items as small as tongue depressors? In the first video all of these departments and more are compactly explained in one sentence each. Understanding how our federal government works is challenging, but this video series helps people understand our democratic institution and its civilian workforce. The four videos cover topics such as how federal agencies keep our country safe and secure, how the presidential transition process works and more. The videos are 3 minutes each, which makes them easy to digest and comprehend.”

National Education Association

“In 2022, we reached a terrifying record: the most school shootings in a single year. This campaign begins with a riveting teacher’s survivor story, and then focuses on what educators are doing curb the epidemic of gun violence—including recent federal legislation. A well-reasoned ‘What Works’ and a lucid article on how to advocate for gun safety give practical measures that individuals can take to stem gun violence. The promotion plan to drive traffic through to a pledge, with follow-up emails or texts to take additional steps and focused Instagram Reels is an effective multi-tiered approach to prompt school-safety activism.”
