"Saving a city under siege" is an interesting comment by Concepts senior writer and editor Carolyn Mulford about her visit to West Berlin in 1964.

Other posts on Carolyn's blog look at farm life in the 1940s. My favorites include "Milking the cows in the 1940s", "The last of the fried chicken" and "Riding the yellow monster." These and other posts give you a superb sense of what life on the farm was like.

And for crime buffs, read these two mysteries: "Crossing the Bridge" and "Chimera." -- Ed.

The Feedsack Dress -- an historical novel

If you're looking for a holiday gift for the young people in your family, I'd like to highly recommend The Feedsack Dress, a superbly written, middle-reader historical novel by Carolyn Mulford.

Published by Cave Hollow Press (2007, 228 pp., $7.95 plus s&h, http://www.cavehollowpress.com), her book has garnered praise from the Midwest Book Review:

"'The Feedsack Dress' is a charming, original, and deftly written novel by an author who has a readily discernible talent for story telling and an impressive ability to make her readers care about her characters."

It's a wonderful story, compellingly told, and while aimed at an audience of younger people, adults also will find it a fast, interesting read.

Don't take my word for it. Read chapter One of The Feedsack Dress -- and other entries -- on Carolyn's blog. (http://www.feedsackkids.typepad.com).

You can order the book through Cave Hollow Press, or online through Barnes & Noble. The site calls it a "used" book, but it's a NEW book, SIGNED by the author, which apparently makes it a "used" book. Go to http://bn.com and search for this, and other novels, by Carolyn Mulford. -- Ed.
